Body and mantle :

The flatened body is teardrop in shape, smooth or with longitudinal ridges or tubercles

They are characterized by bearing a cephalic veil

The retractile rhinophores are located far anteriorly.

The rhinophores lamellae are vertical in this family and not horizontal as in the dorids

Behavior :

Species are usually found on or in sandy substrate, and feeds on Soft corals or Pennatulaceans

They are characterized by having a series of secondary gills between the mantle and the foot, on the side of the body.

The anterior edge of the mantle, behind the rhinophores, is normally complete

Many species have a series of longitudinal lines on the dorsum

Body and mantle :

They are characterized by lacking secondary gills on the side of the body.

The anterior edge of the mantle (a) , behind the rhinophores, is normally incomplete, fused with the head.

Many species have irregular ridges or tubercles on the dorsum
